Your mobile phones gets their fair share of stress too. Torture tests (also known as stress tests) are conducted to ensure they can withstand more than just a couple of accidental drops from the gym or after a meeting. Leading selfie expert, OPPO – employ 150 of these tests to manage and control quality. Here are some of the most grueling:

1. Drop test

Mobile phones are thrown a total of 42,000 times from a 7cm height – that’s 20,000 times each for the front and back plus 500 times for each side.  These are then purposely dropped onto a marble slab at a height of 1.0m to 1.8m on its six surfaces, eight corners, and 12 edges twice. OUCH!

2. Button click test

Volume and Power Buttons are pressed 100,000 times each using a 1kg force. Fun fact – It will take you 6 years to complete this test manually on your own at 50 clicks per day!

3. Tumble test

Handsets are placed in a rotating roller 75 times at a rotational speed of 3-5 times per minute. This simulates tumbling from 1m height 150 times! Corners of the handset may be bruised to some degree, but any function failure shall not be allowed, and the ornament and shell shall not be detached or cracked.

4. Rain test

Mobile phones are left under moderate rainfall (at 60L/hour) to test if they pass the waterproofing grade. They are then are set aside for water to evaporate then disassembled to check corrosion and functionality.

5. Sweat test

A piece of clean cloth is dipped into an artificial sweat solution which is then used to wrap the handset.  The sweat-wrapped handset is to be stored in a hot (55°C)and humid environment (95%H) for 48 hours.

6. Cosmetics Test

Mobile phones are covered with common items we use daily such as makeup foundation, body lotion, beverages from carbonates to regular juices, and even cooking oil.  After 24 hours the surface of the phones are checked to see if there are colors and polished surface remains intact

7. Miscellaneous Tests

Other mobile phone stress tests include twist and bend test, pocket bend test, battery charging, environmental condition test for both hot and cold, camera test, flash test, charging test, and even sea salt test. Failure is never an option and by passing all these tests before reaching your hands you’ll have a renewed sense of respect for your phones.
